elTOQUE Jurídico participates in the presentation of Amnesty International's 2024 report on the state of human rights around the world

August 16, 2024

Eloy Viera, coordinator of elTOQUE Jurídico, was invited by the Americas section of Amnesty International to participate in a Twitter Space where the 2023-2024 Global Report «The State of Human Rights in the World» was presented. The discussion focused particularly on the situations in Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua.

The Amnesty International report assesses the human rights situation in 155 countries and «presents a bleak picture of alarming repression of human rights and frequent violations of international standards, within a context of growing global inequality, superpowers competing for supremacy, and worsening climate crisis,» according to the organization’s Secretary General, Agnès Callamard.

Disorder, discrimination, and impunity in conflicts and other areas have been exacerbated by the unchecked use of new and established technologies, which military, political, and business actors now regularly employ as weapons. Major tech companies’ platforms have fueled conflicts. Spyware and mass surveillance programs are used to curtail the exercise of fundamental rights and freedoms, while governments deploy automated tools targeting the most marginalized groups in society.

«Given the grim global situation, urgent measures are needed to revitalize and renew international institutions designed to safeguard humanity. Steps must be taken to reform the UN Security Council so that permanent members cannot exercise unchecked voting power to prevent civilian protection and reinforce their geopolitical alliances. Governments must also take strong legislative and regulatory measures to address the risks and harms posed by artificial intelligence technologies and impose restrictions on major tech companies.»
